from the ride to the e.r. dept.

Two things to report:

1. Nachos and cheese. If Jesus comes back as a snack food, that’s it.

2. My brother just bought a motorcycle. A Kawaninjacrotchrocketuki something or other. I’m afraid for his life at this point. He isn’t the most cautious driver in the world. Case in point – he backed straight into my car a while ago. From 4 feet out, he managed to get enough speed to destroy my bumper and grill. Like I said, not cautious. I’m thinking this will be a double whammy for him, since now he can ruin his new ride AND leave some brain on the asphalt. Yes he did buy a helmet, but you’ve still got an engine going very fast, two wheels, and your body. That’s it. No nice doors like those fancy cars seem to have. No roof. You have probably seen a motorcycle before; I don’t think I need to describe the differences.

So expect me to miss some work time soon, I’ll be at a funeral. I suppose I should go get my suit dry cleaned. And if anyone is a florist, can I get a discount pre-ordering a wreath before the services?

with 73.8% of the votes

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Gun’s N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine
with 55% of the votes
(The first real challenge for Metallica, and they held up strong.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
with 59.2% of the votes
(Another decent fight, but Metallica took down that bridge and dropped it on the Peppers’ face.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Foo Fighters – Everlong
with 51.7% of the votes
(The closest match so far… You almost did it Dave!)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Jane’s Addiction – Jane Says

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Linkin Park – In The End
with 60.3% of the votes
(Can metallica be stopped???… in the end, no!!!)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats The Killers – Mr. Brightside

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole
with 59.9% of the votes
(Trent was not happy with this, and I heard he may kick you in the face “Pigface style” at the
IZOD Center on the 27th of this month.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats The Police – Roxanne
with 71.1% of the votes
(I’m assuming that most people were involved in the Roxanne drinking game and couldn’t text at the same time… I’ll let it slide this time.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Bon Jovi – Livin On A Prayer
with 53.9% of the votes
(New Jersey was definitely called out by Ian during this match… you made it real interesting… Metallica still comes out on top)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along The Watchtower
with 58.4% of the votes
(Not only did Jimi roll in his grave, but he re-wrapped his acid filled bandana to forget that this ever happened.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Radiohead – Creep
with 62.1% of the votes
(…hmmm… I think I’ve gained a twitch.)

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats Green Day – Basket Case
with 57.5% of the votes

Metallica – Enter Sandman defeats … (Who is the next victim?)

rancid kicks off 5 sold out nights in nyc

RANCID
with special guests SICK OF IT ALL
August 13, 2008 @ Irving Plaza, NYC

Undeniably a perfect night!!! I mean with a pairing like this how could you go wrong?! New York Hardcore legends SICK OF IT ALL opened with a high energy set that brought me back to my days at WSOU (in my past incarnation as “Opie”) when SOIA was a staple band that we just couldn’t play enough of (and genuinely nice guys as well.)

SOIA delivered (as always) and even the most passive listener couldn’t help but enjoy some of their most known tunes, such as “Stepdown,” “Scratch the Surface,” and “Us vs. Them.” Kudos to those guys for staying true after so many years.

And then came RANCID

Last time I saw these guys was Lollapalooza 1996 on Randall’s Island, with Soundgarden (who broke up shortly after,) the Ramones (who started dying off shortly after,) and Metallica (who had just cut their hair and un-LOADed their new “easy listening” sound on us.)

Fast forward 12 years and here we go: RANCID burst onto the stage and dove right in with “Radio” off of their addictive 1994 release “Let’s Go.”

They would do other tracks from that album, such as “Nihilism,” “Gunshot,” and “Black & Blue.” And I was reminded of the great advantage of seeing a punk band… you get TONS of songs, since most are under 2 mins long! ;)

They would go on to play a bunch of tracks off of their most successful album, 1995’s punk/ska fushion style “…And Out Come the Wolves.”

“Roots Radicals,” “Lock, Step & Gone,” “Listed M.I.A.,” an extremely nostalgic version of “Olympia, WA.,” “Journey to the End of the East Bay,” “The Wars End” and “Maxwell Murder” were all included.

Oh and there were so many other great tracks that they rapid fire shot out for us!! They finally closed with their hit “Ruby Soho” and their encore track was of course, “Time Bomb.”

Anyone going to the remaining 4 SOLD OUT shows is in for a great time. I had to buy tixx for this particular show because it was the only one with Sick of it All as the opener, and I just couldn’t resist!! I can’t remember the last time I had this much pure fun at a show. It reminded me of the small club days, even though the place was packed.

There is something quite pure and genuine about these bands that shines through. Some of these bands today that slap on eyeliner and whine into a mic could really learn a thing or two about authenticity from these greats.

Thanks for coming back for us RANCID!!! WE MISSED YOU!!

xoxo

All points west?. Sleeper hit!

So last weekend’s all points west festival at Liberty state park from what i hear varied wildly from day to day. I went Friday after my show and while the new Pornographers were cool, Underworld was really good although they couldn’t really maximize their light show (which is a big part of that sort of band’s appeal) as they went on at 6:30 pretty much in broad daylight. Radiohead were of course radiohead, I dont know if it’s that ive seen them at least five times or that they just didn’t do much more than make me yawn Friday night. However the higlight I have to say was Girl talk. Girl Talk, a one man “band” of sorts who basically just dj’s and runns stuff off of computers but will mash up anything from Jay Z rapping over radiohead “paranoid Android”, to mashing up Nine inch nails, Kelly Clarkson and Blur!. Sounds less than cutting edge to some Im sure but it’s honestly just FUN….anyone remember FUn in music?. Anyway check this out, it’s an example of Girl talk taking a song that  is easy to recognize and working his magic to the point where it is another song entirely.

 That is al, End TRansmission!

MATCH 3: Enter Sandman vs. Sweet Child O’ Mine

Contestant Number 4 come on down…

Big Matchup…

Guns N’ Roses just called Metallica a bunch of Nancy boys for cutting off their hair… It’s on!

Here is a matchup that you could only dream of happening and now its right in front of your face.

Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine
This is tough. I mean, Slash is just a genius with the guitar riffs in this song. From start to finish I feel like I’m floating on Slashes notes. The only person that could have possibly made this song any better is the guy from Space Hog. I heard he passed when they asked him to co-write it… he said he had a better band to help write for or something like that.

As of now this has been the closest battle…
Guns N’ Roses looked like they had this on lockdown…

F*** THAT NOISE!

Metallica said screw your long hair and dreadlocks… We are Metallica… SUCK IT!!!

Metallica – Enter Sandman wins it’s 3rd round and defended the belt twice by winning 55% of the votes…

MATCH 2: Enter Sandman vs. Seven Nation Army

Would the next contender come on down? Let’s try to keep the smackings to a minimum…

Metallica’s – Enter Sandman gets to defend the belt for the first time against none other then the White Stripes – Seven Nation Army.

Here’s a little background info on this tag team duo:

The White Stripes Consist of Jack White and Meg White, a classic combo of quickness and cat-like reflexes. Jack has the potential to finish an opponent with his lightning quick combo’s, just ask the lead singer from the Von Bondies, who was supposedly tossed on the ground and punched in the right eye 7 times in under 2 seconds… Impressive. Meg is quiet but extremely sneaky. If you throw her an inch she’ll dodge it and scratch you in the face 5 times.

All that aside, Metallica’s Enter Sandman gave them one swift kick to the back of the head and it was done.

Metallica successfully defends the title… for now.

MATCH 1: Enter Sandman vs. Fight For Your Right

Before we start this, I would like to say Enter Sandman is going to win this whole thing… And no I’m not a front runner, I’m just sick of getting destroyed in the rankings. My March Bracket Brawl was ruined by taking Tom Petty to get all the way into the final four. That worked out really swell…

So let’s start this off…

Metallica – Enter Sandman vs. Beastie Boys – Fight for Your Right

When you are the first pick in anything that has 39 rounds, odds are you aren’t winning the whole thing, but its Metallica… HELLO!!! This is probably the strongest competitor in this here Summer Slam: Battle for the ultimate K-ROCK Anthem. Enter Sandman screams fist pumping. Just think of the last Metallica show you went to, during this song you probably got cracked in the back of the head from at least 3 different fist pumpers. My head still hurts.

So we move on to the 2nd spin. Beastie Boys – Fight For Your Right. This could be one of the top party anthems of the century. How many of you remember popping your License To Ill cassette into your car, sitting there fast forwarding to track 7, then blasting your radio all the way to 11… BAM… You knew it was gonna be a good night…

So let’s put these two bad boys head to head.
Party Anthem vs. Fist Pump Anthem

According to you, you prefer a punch to the back of the head over a party… Either that or your way of parting is really aggressive.

Anywhow… Metallica – Enter Sandman gave Beastie Boys – Fight For Your Right a fist pump right out the door.

No more “chocolate salty balls”!!!!!!

Sad news this week as soul legend Isaac Hayes has shuffled off this mortal coil at the tender age of 65. Better known to most Krock types as the voice of “Chef” from “South Park”, the guy is one of the greats. Just listen to the 70’s classic “theme from Shaft” which still sounds bad ass today!

 REST IN PEACE “CHEF”

 That is all, End Transmission!

Ladies go topless August 23rd 2008

So a listener has been telling me I should be promoting National Go Topless Day.

At first I thought it was a joke but it’s actually legit.

http://www.gotopless.org

Oh I just realised I made a mistake on-air, i said I didn’t think it was illegal for women to go topless in the state of New York. But I was wrong. It clearly says it on the webpage and is the whole reason they are doing the protest. So in future it’s probably not best to take legal advice from me.

In most European countries and Down Under it’s nothing out of the ordinary for girls to be on the beach with their white pointers on show.

But check out the link and pass it on.
